Don't label me sista!
Something about being labeled as something, or labeling someone else bothers me. Mostly because we are more than just one thing. Let me explain. The other day while dropping Allysa off at the sitters, I was asked by the sitter to show off my Charlotte's Web shawl that I've been wearing under my jacket. My sitter wanted The lady to see it (she's the sweet Grandmothery type) said "oh, your a knitter! I hate people like you!" She was joking and laughing. (She explained that she had tried to learn how to knit. But couldn't) Recently Lynda wrote about her encounter with a yarn shop owner. The owner labeled her as just a sock knitter? This hit a cord with me.
Mostly because lately, I've been just a sock knitter
its all about the easy, as my SIL would say. All about the easy. Easy is what my brain seems to be able to handle right now while Kailey is still in the newborn stage. Easy has become too easy, I've grown bored with socks and want something different. I'm now craving a sweater. Because don't we all want to knit a sweater on the first day of Spring?
Mr. Mailman delivered my knit picks order and the 2 knitting pure & simple patterns I ordered from One fine yarn. Now that I have the neck down v neck shaped cardi in my hands, I don't know what yarn to use. It calls for a dk or light worsted yarn. I so very want to knit a sweater right now, but my biggest problem well, is my boobs. (such interesting google hits I'll get from that sentence. I'm sure) I'm nursing Kailey, my boobs are huge. Soon my boobs will return to their normal size. (non existent) So what to knit, what to knit? I want to knit something that will still fit next year! I've been scouring the net for dk or worsted weight that knits 5sts/inch on size 6 needles that isn't horribly expensive. Is that too much to ask?
So, am I just a sock knitter?
(New Seacoast Panda from yarn4socks.com gilded Lilly is mine, ashes and roses & sorbet are Mom's. btw yarn4socks is having a 20% all yarns containing green till the 22!)
yes, I'm a sock knitter.
I'm a wife, a mother, a sister, a daughter. A friend.
I am crafter, a knitter, a quilter. A needle artist, a paper crafter, a photographer.
I am cook, a repair-woman, a home owner. A volunteer, a jewelry artist, a decorator.
I am me, among many things. But most importantly I am loved.

Labels are a dangerous thing, you and I both know that....you are not only a sock knitter...would you be upset if I said you were a feirce knitter? More gung ho about things lately than I am with anything knitting. As for your boobs.....(I promised to keep this nice LOL) I shouldn't comment HAHAHAHA! Just knit whatever you want and that will make you happy and if it fits when your done nursing then you only have about 8 months to wait to wear it *grin*
BTW~ I read the entire post and didn't just oogle the pics ;)

ah!
i had a similar experience at a baby shower. if i do anything well with this group i am with it is ridiculed and a huge deal is made of things. i just wanted to go be with friends after a crappy week. :-(
obviously the lys has no idea how intricate some of these socks are!
and btw- i am waiting for the nursing to be over so i can knit something that wont smoosh the girls

I have that cardigan pattern, and I too have been searching for the right yarn. The model is knit in Rowan Yorkshire tweed DK, which is discontinued and really cheap if you can find it... sadly, I haven't been able to find enough of the green to make it exactly like the model!
I don't like labels either. I knit socks all fall, and I really started to feel like being a "sock knitter" was somehow less than being a sweater knitter. Which is silly I know... socks can be very difficult. Now I've decided that I'm just a "knitter" and that's better.

you are beyond definition!

Yep, labels.... ugh.
The other thing I never know how to take is when people find out you knit, or see something you've knit - they say "Oh, I could NEVER do that." Somehow it always sounds like a put-down of some sort... I never quite know what to say. Besides, I'm pretty sure most anyone CAN knit!

"Just" a sock knitter?!?!! I think I could knit only socks for the rest of my life and be pretty happy.
Good luck finding yarn for your sweater - what about Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece? Then it won't be too warm for spring.

That's right - nothing "just" about you!

Well said!

hmmm .... something to wear now? socks! ;)
you could knit the sweater for the size you will be when you stop nursing.
labels? i think my least favorite one is when someone finds out that i've machine knitted something (like a lace shawl) and they tell me that's cheating.
ps. looks like you've acquired some really yummy sock yarns! and, the first time i ever saw vesper sock yarn was when i met you and your mom at maryland sheep & wool. so, thank you very much for being a sock knitter and broadening my yarn vocabulary!

I made that sweater! You will love it. I used Jo Sharp Silkroad DK and bought it from ozeyarn.com since even with the shipping it was cheaper.

I am a sock knitter BECAUSE it's easy. Label or not; I will have warm feet. I really don't care what label there is on me, I always either prove it totally wonderful or strive to make it better than what they expect. We are all so much more than what others think/say about us. I have gotten to an age now, that I really don't care what anyone thinks about me. I have taken the stance that the only opinion that matters to me are the people that matter to me. I guess I am just getting bitchy in my old age. I say, Bitch on! lol!
Are you going to MS&W this year? I am going up on the bus with the Knitting Guild ladies. I think we all should meet up some place for some blog gossip.

Um labels...yeah I get labeled by friends as being the obsessive knitter. LOL they just don't get how addictive it is. I think you are an amazing knitter...that would be a better label. :)
As for a sweater to knit now that will fit later.....what about something that is left open or adjustable like a wrap.
There is a free pattern for a simple open sweater called the Flattering Sweater through lionbrand site.

With all those wonderful things that you are (and you are), how could anyone just call you a knitter?
I say stick with the socks until all the sweater ingredients reveal themselves.................

I would like to see you knit a sweater and feed Kailey at the same time! Isn't that why you are doing socks? because you can hold her and knit at the same time.
See you next week!

I wonder about people who make comments like that, and whether they ever actually listen to what comes out of their own mouth. I could deal with with folks who envy someone, but to just say "I hate...."
I also find that these are the folks who like to crab about a problem, but won't make an effort to change things they don't like when offered the opportunity.

When someone tells me they knit, that always seems to be enough for me... I don't think I've ever gone into the "well, what do you knit", so I'm always suprised when someone says to me "oh you are one of those knitters". The good news is we're knitters who can knit whatever we please because we can choose to knit what we want and there is nothing wrong with that!!

Amen Sista! I DO know what you mean, when spring rolls around I get the...ITCH! You know what I mean, and then of course I cast on.
Posted by: Tracey | 03/21/2007
It's funny but when people find out I knit they say the same thing "Oh I hate people like you" But then they want to learn to knit, which means they will turn into "people like me" but most of the time people ask me to knit them something. To which I have to say NO, I may be greedy but 90% of the time I like to knit for myself. I'm a greedy knitter, that is why I like people like me.

Labels are for people who are rigid and judgemental. I won't classify myself as a specific type of knitter or anything else for that matter; the important things for me are that I am kind, compassionate and caring; that I love and I am loved.
Too many people want to stick us in boxes because it makes them feel comfortable; I say 'whatever'. You should never feel you have to justify anything you do or don't do because someone else makes you feel bad about it; the most important thing you are doing is raising four children in a loving and caring household.
BTW I totally agree with the knitting itch....good luck with the scratching!

Ha....I'm just a sock knitter right now too. Good thing I'm ok with that! I'm the long run, all that really matters is that you're happy. I have Kailey hanging on my fridge...thank you for sending her to me!

I say don't pay those comments any mind. There are other things to do and be. I think that your socks are great.
Knit on!

The label would have struck a cord with me too! Have you used the knitpicks DPNS yet? I just got them also but haven't tried them - curious to know what you think.
You have a beautiful family - your children are gorgeous.
